How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign

The bad news? Most people are not born with perfectly straight teeth. The good news? There are many different treatments available to straighten teeth and correct misalignments.

Invisalign is one of those treatments.

In fact, it is one of the most popular treatments available to address mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Many patients enjoy the freedom that comes with being able to remove the aligners when needed, as well as having a treatment that is barely noticeable to those around them.

While the idea may sound wonderful, it is quite a bit different than traditional metal braces. So, let’s talk about how Invisalign works.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works by encouraging the teeth to slowly move into their new position with the help of clear aligners.

Several 3D images of the teeth and mouth will be obtained using a non-invasive scanner. This will be used to create a computer-generated model showing you what your smile will look like once your treatment is completed. It will then begin mapping out how to get your teeth from where they are now to where they need to be.

A series of custom aligners are then created. Each one is worn for a couple of weeks and then replaced by the next one. These are what will move your teeth.

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable and require fewer lifestyle restrictions. This means that they can be taken out when you eat, as well as when you brush and floss your teeth. But, as enticing as this can be, it is imperative that you wear your aligners for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours each day – or risk delaying your treatment.

What Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign is designed to treat many different types of orthodontic needs, including those that affect the teeth, the bite, or the jaw. For instance, patients with the following have had much success with this type of treatment:

  • Overcrowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Spacing issues or gaps
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Deep bites
  • Open bites
  • Edge-to-edge bites

Understand that Invisalign will only be able to address these issues if they are mild to moderate. Any major, complex orthodontic issues may require alternate treatment.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign comes with a lot of benefits which is what draws so many patients to them, including:

  • An invisible, discreet appearance
  • Improved oral health
  • Comfortable aligners
  • The ability to eat anything your want
  • Just as effective as traditional braces – if not more so
  • Easily perform oral hygiene routine – and keep teeth/gums healthy
  • Removable aligners
  • Enhanced appearance
  • Increased self-confidence

Finally, one of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is your beautiful, straight smile.
