If you’re in a state of financial crisis, you’re not alone. Understanding just how much debt you have and developing a plan to overcome it may include getting legal help or other support for debt relief. The tips below can help you make the best choice for you and yours.

What to know about bankruptcy

Bankruptcy doesn’t have to be your first choice to gain debt relief. Before you start the bankruptcy process, talk with a bankruptcy expert so you know

  • What debts will be addressed

  • How much your bankruptcy will cost

  • How long your bankruptcy will be on your credit report

Medical bills and credit card debt are often dischargeable in bankruptcy; student loans are not. Talk with a professional before you file. A bankruptcy can stay on your credit history for up to 10 years, so it’s important to review other options.

Steps to take after a debt relief program

Because bankruptcy can limit your ability to get credit for quite a long time, it may be wise to set yourself up to use cash for consumables. Groceries, gas, and household products should be purchased with cash. Not only will this help you be more mindful of your spending, but you can avoid paying exorbitant interest on the credit cards you still have. Being a bit more hands-on with your cash can also help you feel in control when prices are spiking.

Sit down and carefully review your credit card statements and bank statements. If there are debts on autopay, it may be wise to remove them so you can have better control of the payment date. Each payday, sit down and review what needs to be paid for that period and take care of it as soon as your paycheck hits your bank account to avoid late fees, overdraft charges, or credit card interest.

Creating a budget is beneficial

It’s important to pay careful attention to your feelings and attitude about budgets. It’s easy to consider budgeting as a form of punishment, especially if you focus on the limitations. However, a budget can be very freeing if you use the categories correctly.

If you have a favorite activity that you miss because you never seem to have the money for it, create a budget category. Each payday, put just a few dollars into that category. Fans of travel may not have enough cash to take a cruise to the Bahamas, but an overnight to a nearby city for a concert or other event can be possible. If travel isn’t your thing but you love to go out for a nice dinner once a month, give it a budget category and start adding just a bit of money each payday.

Entering a debt relief program is a terrific way to take the pressure off of your mind and spirit. Money stress is destructive to individuals and families. Once the clamor of collections calls and money worries has been reduced, you can learn a new way to manage your income for the benefit of everyone in your household.
