You know how it goes; you walk into your local gym, and everyone seems to know what they’re doing. Anxiety kicks in while you take in all the different machines, equipment, and stations, unsure where to start. You can conquer this fear, though, and be well on your way to achieving your health goals. Here’s how you do it:
1. Remember Everyone Has Been New
It’s important to remember that everyone, even the most seasoned gym-goers, has been in your shoes at some point. This shared experience can help alleviate some of the pressure you might be feeling.
2. Trainers are There to Help
Don’t hesitate to ask a trainer where to start. In fact, booking a private session for your first time can be a game-changer. It will help you understand where all the equipment and stations are and how to use them effectively to work on achieving your personal goals. If you’re not quite ready to take this step, you can schedule a time to tour the facility. A staff member will take you around and tell you where everything is. Remember, trainers are not there to judge but to guide and support you.
3. Choose an Uplifting Playlist
An uplifting playlist can boost your confidence and make your gym experience more enjoyable. Being in your head with your favorite music will help you focus on yourself and remember that no one is watching. Everyone is there to work on themselves in a positive way and not focus on others and what they may be doing wrong. Music can be your motivator, making the gym a place of comfort and empowerment.
4. Learn Basic Exercises
At the very least, this will give you some direction on how to move your body when doing certain exercises. This should give you a slight boost of confidence since you will feel less unsure as you make your way around the gym. You could even look up videos that give you a basic routine for working out at the gym, including where to start, how long to do each exercise, etc.
5. Bring a Friend
Bringing a friend can help ease the pressure of stepping into a new place for the first time. This is especially helpful if it happens to be a friend who is experienced in gym-going.
6. Learn Gym Etiquette
If you worry about possibly doing the wrong thing while sharing the space with others, take some time to learn gym etiquette. Some of this includes wiping down equipment when you’re done using it, re-racking weights, and being mindful when others might be waiting to use a machine you’re currently using. Learning and practicing gym etiquette boosts your confidence and helps create a more pleasant and respectful gym environment for everyone.
7. Try a Group Class
Most gyms offer group classes. This can help you adjust to working out with others, get to know some of the people who visit this gym regularly, and get to know different trainers.
Preparing yourself in advance to visit your local gym will be your biggest first step in conquering your fear of getting out there. And remember, once you continue to go more and more, you will gain more and more confidence until you feel like you belong completely.
