What Makes Good Algarve Golf Course Designs - By: Jonathan Walker - Big Blue Tomato

Anyone that has ever had a hand in the designing of golf courses is likely to have been asked how it is that the perfect golf course comes about. The answer is quite simple, and that is the land that the golf course is built upon.

There are specifications within the land that will make the golf course that is built on it a good one. It needs to have rolling hills and water. It needs to have trees and area that can be used for rough. It needs to have room for bunkers to be added. Some say bunkers should be done away with, but such people are a minority and deserve to be ignored all the time.

A golf course that does not suffer from being bad, usually has 18 unique holes. If all the holes were the same, then not a lot of people would play such a course, as they would sooner stick to the driving range. A good golf course has holes going off to the right, (dog-legs) and holes going off to the right (dog-legs).

The best golf courses have elevated tees. The purpose of these is to allow the golfer to get greater elevation when they tee off. Of course, the elevation is wholly dependent on the golfers level of skill.

A big hand needs to go to the ground staff of a golf course, who work so very hard to make sure that the golf course remains in good condition. They make sure that the fairways are smooth, and they also work very hard on the greens, in order to guarantee that the ball runs true. The maintenance of the course is of top priority wherever in the world you are playing golf, and whatever the weather is.

Anther important thing that factors in the making of a really good golf course, is the use of grass for the greens. Really good courses tend to use a grass type called bent grass. His is special, because it acts to slow the ball down somewhat, so that it does not roll from the green. Contrary to bent grass is Bermuda grass, which acts to allow the ball to run. The ground that Bermuda grass tends to grow on is harder than the ground that bent grass tends to grow on, so therefore bent grass greens tend to have deeper divots.

The overall attitude and approach of the clubhouse staff can dictate how good a golf course is. This is very much from the point of view of the golfers that play the course. Poor attitude from personnel can cause the golfers to have problems in terms of focussing on their games. Being mistreated by some priggish, blazer wielding microcosm, is enough to anger anyone. Pleasant staff equal salubrious times all round.

The level of maintenance that golf cart paths receive is really important. If a path becomes rough, then the people in the carts will be forced on the fairways, and that is not good.

Rough terrain is something that is going to cause a golf course to be bad. Some have rocks everywhere, imbedded in the soil, so this can cause damage to clubs, and also causes the ball to react differently. A golfer with clubs as battered as his scoring pencil is unlikely to want to return.
