What Sets A Riccar Vacuum Cleaner Apart? - By: Robin OBrien

In today's market we have the choice of buying many different types of vacuum; steam vacuums, stick and hand held cordless model, bagless and cyclonic. Many, high quality brands make these machines. So what, apart from its high price tag, is note worthy about it, and should you buy a Riccar? Is it really one of the best vacuum cleaners, as the company claims?

Riccar have been making vacuum cleaners for over 60 years. It's an American company and its appliances are still made in America, in Missouri. The machines are expensive and put them in the higher-price bracket. When compared to what's out there, the price tag can seem too high. There are many things you won't get for all that money.

Let's start by looking at the build quality. Riccar upright vacuum cleaners come with a lot of metal. The company uses a lot of metal components where other manufacturers have long stopped using metal components, replacing them with plastic. However, the company continues to make uprights with metal components and it does so because the vacuum will last longer. When you buy a Riccar vacuum you get metal wands, metal foot pedal, metal base plates as well as reinforced metal components that you can't see on the inside. Metal outlasts plastic.

Riccar canister vacuum cleaners also come with more metal components than their competitors.

The company has also introduced new ideas into its range of cleaners. For instance many models now come with HEPA filters, with some coming with sealed filters, so not only is dirt sucked up but the air around you is also cleaned of dust and allergens.

On its uprights, the company has introduced something called the Tandem Air System. Instead of one motor, which is what you get on 99% of uprights, you get two. The first is placed, like most other vacuums, immediately above the head. That way you get the best possible suction applied to the floor. The second motor is situated a little higher up. Its job is to provide suction power for the onboard tools and to assist in the filtration system. However, it isn’t as simple as that as both motors have to work synchronously.

It's true the company doesn't make more specialist vacuum cleaners. For instance, you won't find a bagless or cyclonic model. It doesn't make a version for vacuuming pet hair. And, it doesn't make a steam vacuum cleaner. I wish that it would and is perhaps my biggest disappoint with Riccar vacuum cleaners.

Another complaint is that although some models come with HEPA filter, no model comes with washable HEPA filters. You're going to have to replace these (and the bags) with Riccar filters and bags; this is going to be an ongoing expensive if you buy one.

However, the models they do make are robust, powerful and do contain some nice technical innovations. There's no such thing as the best vacuum cleaner, but if you're looking for a canister and especially an upright, then a Riccar vacuum cleaner is certainly worth considering.
