Visiting Pigeon Island National Park on St Lucia Honeymoons - By: Ross Stevenson

Just because St Lucia is well known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear water and all-round paradise island feel, that doesn’t mean that you should spend all your time just chilling out on the beach.

Anyone planning on St Lucia honeymoons would really miss out if that was all that they did – tempting as it sounds to newlyweds! There are some fantastic attractions in St Lucia, and one of the best of the lot is Pigeon Island National Park, so add it to your list and make sure you check it out during your stay.

Quick Overview

Pigeon Island National Park is located off the north coast of St Lucia and became a national park in 1979. Although it was once a separate island, it has now been joined to the mainland by a causeway so that you can cross on foot. It is 44 acres in size, and became a National Landmark in 1992 – giving it a valuable protected status. There is a small fee to visit the island, but it is open throughout the year so you can come for an excursion whatever time of the year you are planning your honeymoon. There is also a restaurant so you can stop off for a snack or a leisurely romantic meal.

Historical Attractions

One of the main attractions of the island is the fort that was built here in the 18th century by Admiral George Rodney. This fort, known aptly as Fort Rodney, was built on the smaller of the two peaks on the island. Although the fort is the main attraction, the island also has some other historical sites from when the British were in charge. These include a couple of barracks and a mess hall worth having a look at.

Jazz Festival

Those lucky couples planning St Lucia honeymoons at the right time of year may be lucky enough to attend the St Lucia Jazz Festival. Although this takes place all over the island, one of the main locations is on Pigeon Island, and provides a unique experience for couples to enjoy. The festival attracts leading acts from all over the world and is considered a festival of major importance – so get out your calendar and start planning!

Discover the History of the Island

Couples exploring Pigeon Island on their St Lucia honeymoons will be able to find out a lot more about it by taking a trip to the Interpretation Centre. Here you will be able to find out more about the interesting history of the island and why it is so important within the context of the entire Caribbean.

Have a Fantastic Honeymoon

Anyone organising the itinerary of St Lucia honeymoons should certainly make the effort to mark in a trip to Pigeon Island National Park. This spectacular park is one of the most interesting and beautiful places in the Caribbean - so don’t leave it out!
