Using an Elliptical Trainer - By: Dan Brathers

Elliptical Trainers have been great for those who want to run or walk but also want to have only a small amount of stress on the joints. They are very easy to use and they have the smoothness of running with using the small amount of motion as you would find by using a bicycle. One should know how to properly use this machine so they can receive a maximum workout.

When getting on the elliptical trainer, make sure that your feet are properly placed at the center of the pedals. Keep a very comfortable stride length. As long as it feels natural to you, you should be fine. If your stride length is too long or too short, you will definitely have a very uncomfortable workout. Short strides create jerky movements that can discourage you from using an elliptical trainer again and you don?t want to waste money if you bought one. Some trainers do have adjustable stride length available.

Many elliptical trainers do have handles that connect to the foot pedals. Once your feet move, the handles move along as well. You can also disregard the swinging handles and just move your arms as if you?re walking or running. It has been noted that this is the best way to receive the benefits of your workout. You simply burn more calories by allowing your arms to swing freely.

In most elliptical trainers, there are devices that allow you to view how many calories you may have burned, how many steps you have taken, and you total timing of your work out. Some even have devices that can read your pulse and your heart rate. Although these mechanisms aren?t 100% correct, they are great guides and motivators.

It may take time to get used to using this machine, so don?t get discouraged if you don?t perform as well as you would like. Gradually increase your resistance and time you stay on the machine. Keep a good posture and always stay relaxed. You?ll be doing fine in no time.
