Types of Mobility Scooters - By: Dan Brathers

Call me weird, but have you ever sat down and thought about how much we take walking for granted. Seriously, the ability to get up and move around as you please is a task that many people often don?t think twice about; that is, until an accident, disease, or simply old age comes into affect. Many disabled or elderly people aren?t able to have that freedom that we mostly take for granted; however, there are mobility scooters that give them that sense of independence that was once missing.

So what is a mobility scooter?

It is battery-powered scooter that allows the person to move around at the push of a button. It can easily be used for both indoors and outdoors and they cover a great amount of distance. They mainly come in three types: Travel scooters, 4-Wheeled scooters, and 3-Wheeled Scooters.

Travel scooters are the lightest of them all. This is the primary reason why they are called ?travel scooters.? They are easy to take with you whenever you are traveling from place to place. They can be disassembled quite easily and stored elsewhere whenever you are making frequent trips. Despite them being ?portable? there are a few setbacks. Travel scooters usually have fewer features when compared to other scooters and they also move at a slower speed. But honestly if you are always on the go then having a scooter with plenty of functions seems like what a waste of time. Also, the scooters tend to have a more reduced range compared to other models.

A 4-Wheeled scooter is a bigger than a travel scooter as you would probably imagine. Because of its bigger size, it has a greater turning range, greater suspension, and it can also support a heavier person. As a matter of fact most heavy duty mobility scooters are 4-Wheeled scooters. These scooters are mostly designed for the outdoors. This is due to the fact that these scooters have the ability to run through an area that has an uneven ground-level. They have impressive stability and balance.

A 3-Wheeled scooter would be considered as the standard scooter. These scooters have a limited turn radius compared to the other 4-Wheeled scooters. This shouldn?t be considered much of a bad thing, because these scooters are mostly ideal for indoors (although they can also be used for outdoors as well). It can maneuver around furniture or places where there are plenty of people.

These scooters definitely promise an individual with limited mobility a chance to obtain that freedom that they once had.
