Top 10 Valentine’s Romantic Hotspots - By: Jon Simpson

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so rather than bankrupt yourself on those over-priced red roses and an exorbitant dinner out (where chefs serve sub-standard food because they know no one will complain and ruin the evening), why not leave the country and explore somewhere new.

As it’s not peak season yet there are still some great deals on cheap flights to be found if you look in the right places.

New York, USA
Grab some flights to New York for some serious sightseeing and shopping, but also throw in a romantic angle to keep the other half happy. Just outside the Plaza Hotel and Central Park in Manhattan, you can pick up a horse-drawn carriage or “Hansom Cab” which can then take you and your loved one on an unforgettable ride through Central Park.

Sydney, Australia
If you live in Europe, then cheap flights to Sydney are harder to come by, but should you be in that neck of the woods, then why not hire your own skippered yacht for a two hour sunset sail round the harbour, before being moored up for the night in a safe bay and left alone to enjoy the rest of the night.

London, England
Why not splash out £330 and get a capsule on the London Eye all to yourself – or with your partner. You get priority boarding, a bottle of champagne, and pink champagne truffles to enjoy as you admire the London skyline from a unique perspective. Unique that is if you don’t work in Canary Wharf, and get to see pretty much the same thing everyday for free.

Paris, France
You’d have to be a bit of a Valentine’s grouch not to include anything about one of the most romantic cities in the world…

Dalaman, Turkey
The rich history and beautiful scenery make this an ideal spot for a romantic getaway – perhaps when it gets a little warmer though. Enjoy the natural sulphur mud baths of Dalyan to enhance your natural glow, before walking through the protected Butterfly Valley after a relaxing boat ride to get there.

Geneva, Switzerland
Geneva is Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city and its beautiful mountain back-drop and lakeside situation make it a popular destination. Visit the Botanical Gardens (or Jardin Botanique) and enjoy the 28 hectares of park devoted to 16,000 plant species from all over the world.

Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a rich and vibrant city with endless things to do and see but for a touch of romantic class and culture, visit the Charlottenburg Palace. The original palace was commissioned by Sophie Charlotte the wife of Friedrich III at the end of the seventeenth century and today, visitors can enjoy the extensive grounds and the collection of buildings which make up the historic site.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Visit the Van Gogh Museum with its 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 letters and get a rare chance to see work from arguably one of the most famous painters in the world. After a bit of culture, have a look round the Heineken Experience to learn about the biggest beer exporter on earth, and you even get to bottle your own beer.

Malaga, Spain
People tend not to think of Malaga as a city rich in history, but it is home to, amongst other treasures, La Alcazaba, the palace for the Nazarite kings built in the 11th century. There are plenty of other architectural treasures to discover as well, and then why not sample some of the great local food and wine of an evening.

Paphos, Cyprus
Visit the natural grotto at the Akamas Peninsula near Polis where legend has it that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love used to bathe. It was here too that she met the hunter, Adonis, and thus the world was given tales of one of the most enduring love affairs in our culture.
