Tips for Potty Training - By: Dan Brathers

Potty training your child can be a very difficult experience if you aren?t sure what to do. It is always important to be patient with your child. If you rush your child into potty training, more than likely the child will be discouraged. You know your child best, so be aware of their limitations and their pace when learning something new. There are a few tips to take note of when you are potty training your child.

A great way to begin potty training is to talk to your child first. Let them know what you are doing in the bathroom. It?d be best if it were the same gender parent of the child, so they can have knowledge of the proper mechanics. Another good idea is to use words associated with the ?act.? Words such as ?pooping? or ?peeing? are ideal for your children. Other family members should be notified as to not confuse the child.

Once the child begins to understand how the potty works, then the next step is to encourage the child so you can keep them more interested. Have a comfortable potty chair that is low to the ground and have them go to the potty at the same time every day so they can get used to going to the bathroom. A great way to encourage this activity is to let them know to notify you whenever they need to go to the bathroom.

Once the child has used the toilet a few times successfully, it is a good idea to dress them in cotton underwear. This allows the child to be aware of being wet when they have an accident. It is best to begin doing this when your child?s diaper stays consistently dry or when the child expresses that they do not like wearing a wet diaper or just aren?t interested in wearing a diaper at all.

It is always a good idea to reward your child after they successfully use the potty and just in case an accident happens, let them know that they should keep trying. Some parents use disposable training pants during the process until the child is fully trained. Speaking of which, avoid using fluids prior to going to bed. Encourage the child to use the toilet so they want fall victim to bedwetting accidents. Of course accidents will happen, so remain patient with your child and you will see progress.
