There Are Three Ways Of Obtaining A Fixed Gear Bike - By: Dave McIntosh

Riding a bike is a fun and relaxing hobby providing you’re not using it for racing. Many people enjoy cycling as a great way of getting out into the outdoors for fresh air and to feel the wind in their face. Sometime the outdoors air is a little too fresh if you’re riding in the country. If you’ve been biking for a while you may be interested in experiencing something different by riding a fixed gear bike.

First you may have to know what exactly a fixed gear bike is. These bikes sometimes called fixies are bicycles that one have one gear and have no freewheel. This means there is no coasting on them. As soon as the bike starts to move the pedals start to go around as well. This makes going uphill difficult as you can’t gear down to make the climb easier and it makes going downhill difficult as your legs have to go as fast as the bike wants to go.

Sound interesting? While some folks prefer to maintain both their regular bike as well as their fixie but for many fixies have more of a cult following. They are ridden mostly by couriers in big cities and by people wanting to experience this different kind of biking.

If you are looking for a fix gear for sale so you too can enjoy this kind of riding then you need to realize like a lot of things not all fixies are created equally. You really have three ways of buying one of these bikes.

-You can buy one new which really isn’t a bad idea if you haven’t had one before.
-You could buy a used one which will certainly save you some money but then you will have to be careful of what you buy.
-Or finally you can buy an old bike and convert it into a fixed gear yourself.

Buying a new one is probably the best for a beginner as you will know the bike is put together right and has everything you need. You can probably find one at your local bike shop though some of them may even have to order one in. This often means you are going to have to pay a premium price for it.

Many times though you can find very good used fixies for sale which can save you a ton of money. Check on places like eBay and you will find a good number. Even if they’re not exactly what you’re looking for the money you save can be used to improve it to what you really want.

Finally you can take an old school road bike that has been retired, and relatively inexpensively convert it into a fixed gear bike. Basically all you have to do is strip off the old gear levers and cables along with the derailleur and swap out the rear wheel for one that only has one gear and you’ve got it made. O yah you will also need a new chain or change the length of the old one. It certainly does take a little more effort than I just described be it can save you a lot of money.

As you think about getting your own fixed gear bike you should ask around and check into it in more depth. But riding one is one of the best ways keeping you in shape.
