The need for high profile flanges in the petrochemical industry. - By: Brooke Pens

The aim of any manufacturer of industrial pipe fittings is to support new construction, and keep MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) costs to a minimum. We at Chemipetro supply standard and custom-designed pipe flanges and fittings mainly to the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. However, our specialist pipe fittings are also used by other industries – for example, paper pulp and biopharmaceutical plants.

Every industry needs components unique to that environment. Most industrial flanges face environmental stresses from several areas. For example corrosion, high internal pressures, and external stresses may all be present in a single unit. That is why our pipe fittings are available in a wide range of high-profile alloys, such as molybdenum, titanium and super duplex.

The petrochemical industry uses a wide range of pipe fittings, which are subject to highly corrosive environments, both internal and external. Corrosion in petrochemical flanges and fittings takes a variety of forms. Apart from the general corrosion that attacks all metals, there are four types of corrosion specific to petrochemical plants: atmospheric, galvanic, stray-current and high temperature (also known as gaseous) corrosion.

OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) rely on well manufactured pipe fittings, made from stress and corrosion-resistant alloys, to build quality plant machinery. Poorly manufactured flanges, made from inferior alloys, have been the cause of many accidents over the years. When heavy plant machinery is installed in the UK, it is to possibly the highest safety specifications in the world – which means high quality pipe fittings. Yet it isn’t just a matter of safety. By using high-specification alloys and precision-engineered fittings, manufacturers can create quality plant systems, which will give optimum performance for continuous and batch processing, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid flow and so on.

Some applications need higher profile flanges than others. By manufacturing our pipe fittings in a wide range of metals we can supply flanges to meet every need.
