The basics of the Federal Income Tax system - By: Mark Jensen

As a citizen of this country, it is important that you understand how the federal income tax law operates. The income tax system is a necessary step in ensuring a properly functioning government. We pay our government taxes so that they can look after us, and offer us our civil rights. Originally, our constitution entailed that any income tax charged must be based and equally distributed among the population of the states. However due to the difference in size of the states, this became a controversial issue. So the congress rectified this to eliminate the problem of uneven population in different states.

The modern day federal income tax law includes considerable complexity, and to a layperson it may seem very difficult to understand and calculate correctly, how much s/he owes to the IRS. However, there are basics that every tax payer should be aware of. Of course if you do not fall into the category of income that is taxable, then you are exempt from taxes. The poor in the country do not have to pay taxes, and the middle class portion of the population pay from 15% to 35% of their income after their deduction. If you fall within the ‘working poor’ you will be refunded every bit of money you paid in the refund cheque for the IRS.

Statistically speaking, only 1% of the population contributes to about three quarters of the entire revenue earned from the federal income tax law conferred upon the taxpayers of the country. This percentage of our country’s population makes over two hundred thousand dollars per year as personal income or as owners of small enterprises making such profits. As a rule, it is wise to be fluent with the federal income tax law and abide by the same, so that you do not incur problems with the IRS.
