The Steepest Mountain In China - By: Grace Fan

Five Great Mountains of China includes Mt Hua, Mt Tai, Mt Songshan, Mt Hengshan and Hen Mountain among which Mt Hua is the most famous for its height and difficult trails to climb. Mt Hua, situated in the east of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province is an important branch of the eastern Qinling Mountains which had been formed 0.7 billion years. Mount Hua, called Western Mountain in ancient, has five peaks, namely, Chaoyao (East Peak), Leaving Wild Goose (South Peak), the Lotus Flower (West Peak), Yuantai (North Peak) and Yunv (Middle Peak) among which the south peak, at 2,160.5 meters, is the highest and the north peak, at 1,214.7 meters, is the lowest Li Tao Yuan, a geographer of Northern Wei Dynasty said in Shuijingzhu (a famous geographic book) that the mountain looked like a flower from the distance. In ancient Chinese language, 花,meaning flower, and 华 (Hua in sound) can be interchangeable, so the mountain was named Mount Hua.

Mount Hua is world-renowned for its bizarrerie, straightness, steep and beauty. Mountain Hua is endowed with five marvelous sights namely, fancy stones, magnificent trees, water, strange cave and its way. Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, Mt Hua was formed by an intact piece of granite through crustal movement hundreds of millions years ago. Why trees in Mt Hua are magnificent? Many old and thick pine trees grow in the crevices of the rocks or on the precipice edge.

Mt Hua is affluent in the accumulation of fairy story, history and culture. A famous story concerned with Mt Hua is Da Yu Controlling the Flood. According to the story, when Da Yu flumed the water to Zhangguan, the two connected mountains blocked the flood. So a god named Juling help Da Yu to break the mountains. Another fairy story is the story of Chengxiang splitting the hill to rescue his mother. Here the hill refers to the middle peak of Mt Huan.

Through research of Zhang Taiyan, a famous scholar of the late Qing dynasty, the Mt Hua is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese culture. Shiji (Historical Records) records that Yao, Shui and Yu (grandfathers of Chinese nation) once came to Mt Huang. Dozes of emperors in Chinese history carried on the large-scale sacrificial ceremonies on Mt Hua.

I once climbed Mt Hua in the forth year of university. My friend and I began our climbing at 23:00 with the aim to see the sunrise. At 6 o’clock, we got to the east peak which is the best place to see sunrise. The sunrise on the mountain is really beautiful. Before the sun taking on, the clouds appear different colors which I never know. It is cold on the top of mountain, so you must take a coat. If visiting Xi’an , you should climb the Mt Hua; it is a big challenge.
