The Original - Napster - At Present Sales Brand New Products - By: Isaiah Henry

If you are over eighteen and have been downloading music for awhile, chances are the first site you visited was Napster. There is a good reason you probably used Napster early on; they were the only game in town for quite some time. More than half of a million songs were downloaded daily from Napster when it was at its height of popularity. Music industry execs began to fight Napsters release of music; claiming that it had been pirated. Eventually, the music industry won the battle but not the war. Napster was down for a short time but has since come back and is once again a successful source for music downloads.

Under the guidance and direction of CEO and Chairman of Chris Gorog, Napster is now ready to join other sites that offer MP3 downloads. They will be joining sites like RealAudio, LiquidAudio and MP3.com who have been offering this service for quite some time now. Has Napster missed the proverbial band wagon when it comes to MP3 downloads? Some think they may have. This company always fights and finds a way to survive so, dont put an L in their loss column yet.

Record industry moguls have been opposed to and resisting the release of MP3 files. They may not be able to keep up the resistance much longer, though, due to the immense losses the music industry has been experiencing. The losses are due to the fact that most people now get their music solely via downloads from the internet. CD sales have dropped so dramatically that the industry is claiming losses in the billions of dollars. If they wish to avoid even more losses, they might have to release many more MP3 files and do so sooner rather than later. It is highly unlikely that the music shopping habits of a generation will change. There is no indication (and no reason why) music lovers will abandon downloads from the comfort of their home to once again buy CDs at retail stores.

Gorog is optimistic about Napsters success in the MP3 market. He has said he is extremely pleased with Napsters progress and is encouraged because they will now be playing on a more level playing field. Not everyone shares Gorogs optimism though. Robert Enderle (Principal Analyst for the Enderle Group) states Napster might have a chance if they choose the right competition. Enderle suggests that Amazon would present a good opportunity for Napster. Because Amazon is not primarily known for music downloads, Napster (who is) may have a distinct advantage.

Robert Enderle, however, does not indicate there is no hope for Napster to grow in the MP3 arena. Napster might have a chance if they choose to focus on the right competition. Enderle feels if they focused on competition with the likes of Amazon, they would have a greater chance of succeeding. Why is Amazon a good target for Napster to pursue? Because Amazon is not primarily a music download site.

Ever the optimist, Chris Gorog recently said he was happy with Napsters progress and felt ready to compete with the giants like Apple on amore level playing field.
