The History of Strollers - By: Dan Brathers

Parents have always wanted to have the most convenient ways of caring for their children while traveling. There have been a variety of inventions for transporting our children over the years ranging from slings in ancient times all the way to modern strollers. Since strollers are the most modern form of equipment intended to carry children from place to place, I?m quite sure may wonder where the idea comes from.

Parents who are grateful for their strollers should thank William Kent. Kent was popular garden architect in England, so popular that in fact, the Duke of Devonshire wanted him to build a sort of device used to transport and amuse his children. Kent decided to create a basket that was shaped similar to an egg that would carry children. It would have four wheels and would be carried by a small horse or goat. As you may have guessed, this idea caught on and became quite popular. Other noble families had these carriages created for them as well.

During 1840, the new invention became widely popular. Queen Victoria ended up buying three carriages from a baby store. By today?s standards, the models were unsafe; they were very tall but also very fashionable. Only people of high society had these carriages.

The overall designs of these strollers were quite different. They were made of wood and were held together by brass joints. Because of it being symbolic of being of higher class in society, the strollers were heavily decorated and could also be considered works of art. Many of the models were named after royalty.

Around this time, the baby carriages were still pulled by four-legged animals. Eventually, an American named Charles Burton decided to create handles on these carriages so the parent so the child can actually transport the child themselves. America did not accept this idea, so Burton made way for England and was eventually hired by royalty, including Queen Victoria and Pasha in Egypt.

By 1889, the new design for the carriage became public. A new patent was made for a reversible stroller. This was made by William Richardson. Structural changes were made and the bassinet faced towards the parents.

From then ?til now, there have been variety of changes that have made the stroller what it is today. Now there are a wide variety of strollers made available to fit all sorts of situations. There are strollers made for running and jogging, strollers intended for traveling, and many others.
