If you walk into any sporting goods shop or fishing shop, right away you are going to notice one thing. You will see an overwhelming assortment of trout bait and lures. They will all have an advertising on the jars or boxes that mention how great they are and their use. But how do you choose the best bait and not break the bank? How do you know what to buy and what to stay away from? The salesperson will most likely recommend the more expensive bait.

For the fisherman who loves the sport, but not the price, there are a few options that will meet their needs. There are two bait types that you can focus on. The first is cheese and the rest are dry flies or wet flies. These are the three most common. You can find them at very low prices and they do well within a number of environments.

I remember when my father and I started fishing. We had very little money. He bought me a very inexpensive rod, gave me a small hook and put some cheese on it. The interesting thing was, I got a few bites and reeled in a few trout. I did not have an expensive rod, bait, lures, clothing etc. All I had was my rod, hook and bait. The cheese floated on the surface most of the time because I did not have a weight to sink it. Yet the fish still came to the surface to take it my bait. Sometimes the simplest things work the best.

For those that think they need expensive gear to catch a trout, this is completely wrong. If you have the right technique, you are going to catch something. It may not be the big one you reel in, but you will have success even when you are on a budget. Stick with cheese if you are fishing a lake and try dry flies if you are fishing a river with a top film. For slow moving streams and creeks with small pockets of knee deep water you are going to want to try a wet fly. Trout will be sitting in those knee deep pockets waiting for a meal to come by.
