Stock Photo– Understanding Them Better - By: Charli Jhonson

Photography is an art; it requires an eye for color and design. It is not something everyone is good at and it is something which we all do as a hobby or to just record some memorable moments in our lives for good. Photography is about being able to make something ordinary look interesting. By choosing the right angles and lighting, even an object of daily use can look very interesting and spectacular. Stock photos are an important part of the world of photography.

We see pictures in many magazines and newspapers. There are numerous articles churned out each month, each year and these articles need pictures that tell the story or add to it. Stock photo comes from a storehouse of pictures which have been taken by professional photographers and these pictures are licensed for specific needs and uses.

When the recession happened people found a need to cut down on their expenses. IT was not possible to send photographers out on assignments for photo essays or articles as it would incur a lot of expenses. Stock photos give people a way to acquire photos cheaper, without paying for all the expenses for travel and acquisition of photographs from a hired photographer.

Rather by being part of an agency with stock photos, you can browse from a large collection and choose what you need to use for your work by paying a nominal fee. There are arrangements by which a person who has purchased a stock photo can use them repeatedly for various printing needs. They are essentially purchasing the rights to use those stock photos as the need arises.

Stock photography has big names like Getty images and Corbis leading the market and generating maximum revenue. These companies offer photographs shot by professionals and are slightly more expensive to purchase. There are plenty of other agencies in the market offering stock photographs that are shot by amateurs or newer professionals whose photos cost less and sell in large volumes. These are also called micro stock photographs. These photos are a huge part of the print media and they continue to grow popular with advertising agencies and other areas needing them.

There are different kinds of agreements when buying a stock photo. For individual licensing agreements each time an agency uses it there is rights managed stock photography. Royalty free stock photography is for those people who wish to use the image unlimited number of times for different needs.

There may even be requests made by a client purchasing rights on a stock photo that all rights to that photo be kept exclusive until a certain period of time, this of course would be slightly more expensive. There are also ways of defining which regions a stock photo may be published in, as these same photos may have agents locally in certain countries and their sale may be done only through those channels in those places. There are even some sites providing stock photos for free at a low resolution for some advertising campaigns and marketing purposes.
