The AIT (advanced intelligent tape) tape format was created by Sony in 1996 and since then it has been leading backup tape technology providing its users best and cost effective solutions. All the generations of AIT are backward compatible (both read & write) with its previous versions.

The AIT tape drive of the 4th generation can read & write the AIT3 media and read the media of AIT-1 & AIT-2. An environment that is virtually free from contamination is provided because of the durable media of AME that reduces the requirement of periodic cleaning.
