Seven Common Traits of Successful Hitters - By: Kris Saelen

Although each baseball player has their own style, methods and beliefs in what makes a good player there are common denominators. There are 7 common traits of successful hitters, although not everyone will bat the same even if they have similar characteristics. If you are a batter and want to experience the success that others have, you should not try to mimic them, but instead you should try to understand the seven traits they have in common and work on them.

When learning the art of batting, every successful hitter will have to be confident of their abilities and in themselves. If you question yourself when up for bat, you will make mistakes and react to slowly and that is not the way to play at peak performance. Confidence can be reinforced through mental and physical training and if you are ready before batting, then you will take everything with ease when the baseball is coming your way.

Another common trait among batters is that they are comfortable with their style. Successful batters find their own batting technique and style and that is what sets them out of the crowd. By trying out different stances, bats or hand positions you will develop your own unique form and will be as good of a hitter that you can be. All good batters also are capable of reacting quickly. Being able to act when necessary and quickly is essential when you are a hitter and it is a key to success.

Recognizing a situation and reacting correctly is another trait that successful baseball batters have in common. A batter must quickly recognize what kind of pitch will be thrown, accurately judge how fast a baseball is coming at you and also react at the right time and with enough force to strongly hit the ball. Every batter also needs to have a well developed torso. A strong torso will enable you to be quick, flexible and forceful when hitting.

Balance must be maintained at all times by hitters, and that is something that every successful batter can do. In order to be a good hitter, balance is needed before, during and after the swing of the bat. If all three are not present, the performance will be lacking. Lastly, a short swing is something that every good batter is capable of. Long swings are not as effective in hitting balls hard so that they go far from the diamond.
