Selling Old Comics - By: Charli Jhonson

Selling Old Comics can be a very rewarding experience, especially if you have some comics that are rare or hard to find. When buying and selling old comic books, it is very helpful to have an understanding of the history of comic books and what comic books are considered valuable. The following paragraphs will help explain the different movements of the comic book world and how to use these movments to find comic books that are collectible and of value.

The Golden Age of Comic Books

As with the movements of history, comic books have also experienced different ages where they changed over a period of time. The golden age of comic books can be targeted by looking for comic books that have a sticker price of around ten cents on the cover. Although this is a general rule of thumb, one should not expect a comic book he or she finds with a sticker price of ten cents to be worth millions. Again, comic book value depends on a lot of thing.

Golden age comics were produced between the years of the 1940’s and late 1930’s and this is when the idea of superhero comic books began to emerge. During this time, the world began to see the inception of characters such as Captain America and Superman, both of which are very valuable comic books depending on which run one may have.

What Comes Next

The next large movement in comic book culture was seen in the later 1950’s up until around 1970. The sticker prices on these comic books can have a general range of about twelve to fifteen cents but again, one should always keep in mind that not all of these comic books during that time are valuable. During this time, the super hero genre continued to grow and the themes and issues that the characters would encompass would become much more complex. At the same time, comic books were not only for children and began being developed for adults as well. This is when the more adult themed comics came about such as office life as well as comedy magazines.

During this time, many people began reading comic books but many were not concerned with collecting them. The short runs and the special editions had not came out yet and many people would simply throw the comics away after they had finished with them. The more popular form of comic book collecting would come mainly in trading the different books while finding full runs of one comic book were and still are rare during this time period as sell old comics books was not seen as very profitable.

The Comic Crash

With the advent of the 1980’s, comic books had started to develop intrinsic value and people began to start collecting their books instead of discarding them. It was also during this time when publishing companies began the mass production of comic books. With more and more people reading and collecting comics, the value of older comics began to increase and getting a hold of rare comics began tough. Seeing this, the publishing companies began producing special edition comic books and trendy covers in hopes that collectors would deem these to be very valuable.

Although initially this trend would take off, it would become the ultimate demise of comic books in the 1990’s when comics began losing their value or comics that were bought in the past did not increase in value as expected.
