Besides all of the money you'll save, a nice thing about buying from a consignment store is that you get to take the dress home with you right away. This method of finding a dress does require quite a bit of persistance and patience. It's not every day that people will come in with a wedding gown.

The local classifieds are another great place to look for a used wedding dress. Although it's sad, many brides who have had their weddings called off put their dresses up for sale in the classifieds. These dresses have only been tried on once or twice and are basically unused. Craigslist is also a great place to check online.

Keep in mind that your dress will very likely require some alteration work to it. Many bridal stores will only do alterations on dresses that they sell. You will need to find a local seamstress to make the alterations for you. Keep in mind that talented seamstresses are tough to find and may be quite pricey. You'll need to factor in how much you saved on the dress and how much the alterations will cost when deciding to purchase a used dress.
