Sanford Divorce Trial Televised? - By: Martha Chan

I see that the governor Mark Sandford’s wife’s court appearance was televised. I wondered if there was a choice for it not to be televised.  I then remind myself that they do not have to appear in court. This can be done behind the scene.

There is an option for all of us to file for divorce law privately, especially if you are a celebrity or politician who is in the public’s eyes and have the means with which to pay for it. Was the Sanford case conducted publicly for publicity, revenge, humiliation, satisfaction, book promotion, or self healing? If you make and prove the other party wrong publicly, I have to wonder what it is like for the children and family members involved. Not just today, but for the rest of their lives. After all, these are archived as videos and news on the internet for many, many years.

Freedom of speech does not mean you must speak and tell, never mind do it publicly.  I’d like to think that politicians and celebrities have access to help and advice before they choose what to do. They don’t all need to be the models of society, at least not the celebrities or spouses of politicians – they didn’t sign up for that. There are certainly examples of elebrity splits that went well and some we barely hear about (Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, etc.) and some who started out bad but both parties decided to make a shift for the better (Ivan and Donald Trump). Of course that didn’t stop the stories/speculations in the media. But maybe we cannot blame everything on the paparazzi and elevision when the fire is being fueled.
