Retire; Yes I can! - By: Charlotte Demontigny

Many baby boomers are asking themselves this
question. Given the current economic crisis, the
answer may change from month to month.

In so many cases, the need to supplement
retirement is a fast growing phenomenon. In one
case, a woman retired two years ago and thought
she could live on her pension. Was she in for a
big surprise! Currently, she is working for one
company, while additionally supplementing her
income with whatever profits are received through
her website.

To say these are difficult times is an
understatement. Another woman was asked, “When
are you really going to retire?” She too is
trying to supplement her pension working as a
home-based writer. For her and many like her, the
answer to the question may be “when all my bills
are paid or when I die, whichever comes first.”
This may be more of a truism today due to the
uncertainty of our times.

While President Obama is struggling to turn this
economy around, every day jobs are being lost
through layoffs. By the end of the year it is
estimated that more than 2 million jobs will be
lost, not to mention the number of small
businesses, large corporations, and banks who
will inevitably become insolvent.

While the average paycheck has been reduced by
more than $2000 due to inflation, one has to
wonder how impending retirees will be able to
cope. Certainly, many lost most of their hard-
earned savings during this crisis, and many more
are trying to develop a strategy that will keep
them afloat when they do finally retire.

Retirement should be a time of enjoyment; a time
when stress is but a fleeting memory.

Instead, everyone here and abroad has been
financially affected by those who used their
power toward one end – greed.

As retirees struggle to make ends meet,
corporations are purchasing 50 million dollar
corporate jets, doling out millions of dollars in
bonuses, and modernizing their offices and
bathrooms.

Another truism is that change is badly needed,
not only among our financial institutions but
among those who utilize any means necessary to
justify their individual goals. It is a sorry
state of affairs when a major financial
institution is bailed out, only to find they
misused the funds to take their employees on a
weekend jaunt.

We have to engage in a discourse that changes the
mindset of those who utilize unscrupulous and
capricious acts to increase their financial
wealth. With only two classes of people – the
very rich and the very poor – it’s not surprising
that we are on the precipice of another
depression.

Thus, the question ought not to be “When will you
retire?” The question now is: “Can you retire?”
