Repairing Vertical Blinds On Your Own - By: Allan Michael Taylor

When you find that some of the vanes or slats on your vertical blinds are damaged, you can actually do some of the repair work yourself and it is not that difficult as long as you have a little bit of a handyman in you. When you need to repair your window blinds, you will need to have a replacement for the vane or the slat that is damaged. Vinyl window slats can be readily located at your nearest hardware or home improvement store. To get the shade of the replacement slat as close to the one that is broken, remove the broken slat first from the whole attachment and cut off a piece of it with the use of scissors. Use this sample to compare with what your hardware or home improvement store has by way of replacement vinyl slats or vanes.

Once you have bought the replacement slat or slats you will use on your vertical blinds, you will then need to begin substituting these broken vanes by removing them from their attachments first. You will first need to remove the chain at the bottom of the whole attachment since these vanes are connected to one another with this chain. You won't need to remove the other slats to get to the damaged ones since these are attached individually to the hanging rod of your window blinds. Once you have taken out the damaged slats, you can then prepare the replacement slats for attaching.

When you attach the new slats to the hooks on the hanging rod, you should try to ascertain that the orientation or the direction that your new vents are facing is the same as the original ones that are still hanging on the curtain rod. Hang each one carefully on each available hook. After you have safely attached the new slats to their individual hooks, you will then need to run the chain through all of the slats and secure it at the end. Try to test the new slats by opening and closing the slats and opening and closing the whole set of window blinds. Your vertical blinds are now as good as new.

If the vertical blinds that need repairing are not made with vinyl but are made with fabric, you will need to be adept with a needle and some thread to be able to do some repairs on it. Since the vanes of cloth or fabric window blinds are harder to find, you will need to be able to patch up any holes you find in your fabric vertical blinds to be able to return them to normal. If the tear is in the body of the slat, it can be easily closed up with thread that is the same color as the slat. If the tear is near the hole that is attached to the hook or the hole got ripped off, you can reinforce and repair this with the use of similar colored fabric that is folded together to thicken it and sewn on each side of the gap. This will help hold your damaged vane up in its place after you have re-attached it.
