Protect Your Baby from The Sun This Summer - By: Stanley Lewis

As a parent you will be very aware of the need to protect baby's delicate skin from the dangers of over exposure to the sun's potentially harmful rays. As the summer nears you will no doubt be thinking of ways in which you can enjoy some fun outdoor activities with your young child, whilst also being concerned about protecting them from the sun. With adequate sun protection clothing and accessories there is certainly no need to avoid the outdoors.

The skin of a baby is far more sensitive to the sun's rays that you may think, and certainly more sensitive than an adults, and it's vital to take the necessary steps to ensure your baby does not suffer excessive sun exposure.

UV protective clothing, usually a one piece baby sunsuit or two piece bottoms and tops set, is certainly something you'll need when on a beach holiday or by the pool, but it's also great for days in the park or garden too. Good sun protective clothing is designed to ensure adequate coverage of the body and limbs, and you should check to see that the label indicates the material is approved as a sun protective swimwear garment and equivilent to at least a factor 50 sunblock.

A good sun hat is also an important sun protective line, and something that baby should be wearing however briefly he may be out in the sun. Wide brim sun hats are usually popular and look smart, but it's the legionnaire's style sun hats that offers the best protection. The extra length of material at the back provides extra protection to the neck and back of the head. As with clothing, sun hats can also carry approval markings to indicate the material itself is sufficiently UV proof.

Even the best sun protective clothing and hats need to be complimented by a good covering of sunblock suncream. However much coverage may seem to be offered with clothes and hats there is next to no potection to the delicate face, hands and feet without a good suncream.

Finally, you'll want to consider baby's eyes. As with the skin, young eyes are far more sensitive to the sun than our own. When you consider infants spend time travelling face up in a pram, pushchair or car seat you can see how important good eye protection is. Specially designed sun glasses in baby and toddler sizes are available from specailist makers. As with normal sunglasses, standards exist to indicate the level of protection offered, and you should look for UV400 rated models that are comply to AS 1067-1990 or other standards.

Combine approved eye wear and clothing with a good sun protection cream and you are your baby are on the way to enjoying fun days out safely and in comfort this summer.
