Prostate Cancer and Obesity - By: Dan Brathers

A study has found that men that have developed prostate cancer have a higher risk of dying from the disease if they have high level of insulin and if they are overweight.

Observers examined information that from over 20,000 male doctors from 1982. It was noted that those who had a very high level of protein that rose with the secretion of insulin and who were overweight had an increased risk of dying by four times, after being diagnosed of prostate cancer. This would still be even if the tumor were to be detected years later.

Less than 200,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed a year, which makes this the most widespread tumor among men. The only illness that is more responsible for death among men is lung cancer. Several patients end up dying from other causes, mainly because cancer grows very gradually.

It has been shown that body weight and levels of insulin in the person can determine how a doctor should treat the condition.

Men who were obese prior to their diagnosis of prostate cancer have a higher risk of dying than if they were of normal weight. Remember that people who are considered overweight or obese are defined based on their body-mass index.

Because obesity can cause metabolic differences or fluctuations, researchers decided to measure the level of C-peptide. C-peptide is a reflection of the secretion of insulin throughout the body. Concentrations of high levels of insulin can help the growth of tumors. It was noted that men that had higher concentrations for insulin had a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer, regardless of their weight measurements.

Men should all take note of these results of this study. Health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease may all add fuel to the fire of prostate cancer.
