The photovoltaic process involves exciting the electrons into a higher state. When this occurs, the cells create an electric field where electricity is produced. The process happens once the cells come in contact with sunlight. As the energy produced is greater when there is more sunlight made available, solar panels or modules are much more commonly positioned or mounted on house roofs or building roofs. The roof is an open space directly where the sunlight hits as well as provides enough protection to the photovoltaic equipment from damages probably resulting from other human activities.

The first photovoltaic cells were utilized to power space satellites. Off-grid production also allows it to power solar cars, boats, remote sensing, road emergency telephones, and many others. Nowadays, people can use the technology in their own homes through solar panels which are designed and appropriated for home use. Companies that offer photovoltaic modules offer up to twenty five years in warranty. These manufacturers also give guarantees related to the minimum level of power that a module can produce given a certain number of years. The performance of photovoltaic material depends on the technology and rated peak power. The rated peak power is usually at 80% of the given or manufacturer-set power.
