Photojournalism – Various Aspects That You Should Be Aware Of - By: Charli Jhonson

It is not uncommon for people to pick up a particular magazine or newspaper because they have pictures to tell the story. The concept of clicking pictures that literally speak a thousand words is called photojournalism. This is a category of journalism which involves clicking, editing and developing pictures that reveal the current news to people. While most often than not, people usually associate this to still pictures, videos being used for news broadcast are also a part of this concept. Though there are various branches of photography, the factors that distinguish photojournalism from the rest are the timeliness, narrative and objective of the photo.

Types of photojournalism

There are two main categories of photojournalism. Under the first category, the images are used to substantiate the feature article that is being written about that particular news. In this case, the authors of feature articles liaise closely with photojournalists in order to get the right pictures that can be published along with their news articles. Under the second category, there are no news articles involved. It is just the pictures that do the talking and reveal the news to the viewers.

While it may seem to be an easy task to click pictures, it is far from the truth. Creating pictures that speak volumes needs a lot more than just a click of the camera. First of all, you should have the ability to think on your feet. You should be able to figure out a scene that is worth capturing to tell particular news. You need to have a good camera handy at all times and know the right angles to capture the pictures perfectly. Don’t inhibit your creativity if you intend to become a photojournalist.
