Ottawa Cosmetic Dentist Runs through Benefits of PPM Mouthguard for Sports and Fitness - By: pamelali

OTTAWA, ON - Before the invention of the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM), the mouthpiece was primarily used to protect athletes from cracking or chipping teeth, biting the tongue, and concussions. Now, with PPM technology, certified dentists are providing customized mouthguards for athletes that provide many bonuses when training and competing.

“At first, considering a mouthguard as a game-changing piece of equipment might seem farfetched,” says Dr. Pamela Li, a PPM certified Ottawa cosmetic dentist. “But, if you think about it, the mouth is one of two airways that feed oxygen to the body’s muscles and expels carbon-dioxide. Also, the neuromuscular systems are enhanced through the PPM, which enhances many physical aspects of athletic performance.”

The PPM helps an athlete by correcting misalignment in the jaw, thus improving two main factors: the body’s airways and the neuromuscular makeup of the athlete. By aligning the jaw in its optimal position, PPM users experience real boosts to strength, concentration, agility, flexibility, balance, and other performance factors as well.

Airways

Whether it be a contact or non-contact sport, PPM provides benefits by increasing oxygen intake during physical activity. Compared to other mouthpieces that only provide protection to the teeth and tongue, PPM’s design opens up airways, which improves oxygenation of the body. Improved delivery of oxygen to the body’s muscles increases endurance.

There are generally two different types of PPM appliances for either contact or non-contact sports. For athletes involved in high impact sports, there is an upper mouthguard that aligns the jaws and opens the airways and protects the teeth as well. For non-contact sports such as golf, the PPM appliance is worn on the bottom jaw and is more discrete and comfortable.

“The PPM provides a much larger advantage in performance than you’d expect,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa dental practitioner. “PPM equipment is used by some major athletes such as Shaquille O’Neil, Terrell Owens, and Olympians Bode Miller and Apollo Ono. All of these professional athletes experience a boost from PPM that is not steroids and is100% legal.”

Neuromuscular

Muscles in the face, jaw, and neck are some of the most used muscles in the body. Because of constant use and a high propensity for stress to effect these muscles, most people experience tension, nerve-pinching, and even a buildup of toxins in these areas. However, with neuromuscular treatment, all of these problems are addressed and corrected by releasing tension and aligning the jaw.

“It doesn’t take a scientist to know that muscles are at optimal potential when they are relaxed and in their proper positions,” says Ottawa general dentistry practitioner. “But, to get muscles in relaxed and proper position is often difficult as our bodies naturally form their own tension spots and misalignments. Part of neuromuscular treatment is to relax the muscles of the neck and face, which has a ripple effect on the muscles throughout the body.”

According to the Ottawa Invisalign and PPM practitioner, the body can easily become misaligned. In fact, misalignments in the hips, shoulders, and other areas of the body can be effected by neuromuscular problems in the jaw and neck.

Method

PPM mouthguards are custom-molded to the unique jaw alignment of each patient notes Dr. Li. Finding the perfect jaw alignment that unlocks all of the performance benefits of the PPM technology starts with relaxing the muscles and nerves of the neck, jaw, and face that gradually lock into tense, inefficient alignments.

Relaxing these muscles and nerves is achieved through light electrical stimulation via a TENS machine. After the muscles and nerves are rendered relaxed, a measurement of the jaw’s alignment is taken. After, a custom PPM appliance is manufactured by the Makkar Athletics Group, who is responsible for inventing PPM technology. The newly created mouthguard is optimized for that specific athlete’s jaw, and opens up a world of improvements to performance.

There are three levels of PPM. The PPM Key is an entry level mouthguard, the PPM 1.0 is mid-level and the PPM Elite is targeted at more serious athletes who want the highest level performance.

PPM dentists such as Dr. Li receive special training in neuromuscular physiology and conducting special tests and measurements to yield optimal results. For more information on this technology, visit Dr. Li’s Web site: http://www.drpamelali.com/, or http://www.makkaradvantage.com/.
