Numbness in your limbs? Watch out for diabetes. - By: Dan Brathers

A new study has revealed that the numbness that some diabetics may have in their limbs is one of the major causes of how these patients end up losing their feet or toes.

Although it has been considered a major factor for a very long time, studies show that this happens to be one of the very first to reveal a certain factor between having an amputations and having a loss of sensation. Loss of nerve damage comes from having high levels of sugar in the blood.

This also found that the other main reasons for amputations are certain infections that are found in other parts of the body and also the reduced amount of blood flow that is caused by the building up of fat in the arteries.

Nearly 10 percent of those from Singapore are diabetic.

On a yearly basis, doctors amputate over 650 legs and feet because of the disease.

Of the 33 percent of those who had an amputation, most were over the age of 55, and they already had serious medical problems, such as heart or kidney disease.

It was noted that drinking, smoking, and obesity were not considered factors that were the cause of amputation.

During the study they performed, about 70 percent of the patients refused to check on their blood sugar levels and did not follow through with properl
y tracking their health. This has made the leaders of the research to prompt a way of treating diabetes holistically.

Many diabetics often neglect to get foot screenings. Usually, these are the diabetics who experience numbness in their toes and feet. This proves that it is always best to get proper foot screenings, especially when experiencing discomfort in your feet or toes.

Patients should also check their feet for wounds because infections can occur and that can create a higher risk of amputation.
