Nadal Is Closer to the Tennis Number One Spot - By: Ally White

After this past Sunday win at the Toronto Master, the Spaniard tennis player Rafael Nadal continues to increase his fans’ hopes that he could shortly become the new world number one tennis player. Nadal won the final match against the German Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-2 and with his result he moves up in the rankings and closer to the number one spot which has been Roger Federer’s possession for the past four years.

The present year has brought many triumphs to the Spaniard athletes in all sports especially after Carlos Sastre’s latest win at the Tour de France just last week.

"We are very happy for everything we've won in the last few months, a lot of important things for the country. The Tour, the European Championship in football, (Formula One driver Fernando) Alonso, Roland Garros, Wimbledon," mentioned Nadal.

Toronto becomes Nadal’s 29th consecutive win and he gets to only 300 points from Federer who did not make it past the first round in the Canadian tournament. It is no news to us that the Swiss Master has been struggling in the past ATP tournaments while on the other hand; Nadal keeps growing strong and unstoppable as he continues to play. This is basically how Nadal continues to gain terrain but we do know Federer will do his best to hold on to the privileged spot as long as he can.

Nadal has declared that he feels more and more comfortable on the hard courts which in the past were his weak spot. He also understands there is a lot of pressure and this makes it even harder to continue win every game he plays. These past four years that he has been in the number two spot have thought him that discipline, patience and hard work are the key to success.

The Spaniard tennis player holds a record of 30 career titles which make him the third youngest tennis players to have achieved this lot of victories at such young age and basically on all surfaces – adaptability - which is what states how really good a player is.

Toronto means Nadal’s second title in Canada after winning the trophy in Montreal approximately 3 years ago. Rafa has now won the preceding last five tournaments counting the French Open and Wimbledon. So for this year Nadal has a total of seven titles, 61 game wins and only seven losses.

In order for Federer to stay in the number one spot the Swiss star will need to win the Cincinnatti tournament and continue his streak into the US Open if he wants to remain in the leading position otherwise Nadal will soon move in to the number one position for the first time in his career.

Despite the eminent situation the young Majorcan is reserved about the situation and only focus on how good he feels to be at a very good peak in his professional career regardless of what the future holds for him. Whether he dethrones Federer or not, it is not for him to decide alone as the Swiss will make sure his game is felt before the rankings finally changed.
