NCAA Football - Will Muschamp will be Texas next head coach - By: A. Nolan

Mack Brown has not retired yet but the University of Texas already announced who will be his successor as soon as he leaves the position of head coach; the one chosen is Will Muschamp, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the team and his job has been very remarkable already since the defense has being changing while he is being in charge.

It is not certain when will be the moment that Mack Brown will decide to retire, since he still has 8 years on his contract and he has said that he is not planning to retire any time soon; he wants to make another try for a national championship while he is still with the team.

In fact, according to him this is not any immediacy for him, rather he is pleased with the decision, "It's exciting that Will would wait until the right time to move forward. Not many people would do that. I hope people don't think it's a twilight for me. It's a new beginning for all of us," Coach Brown said.

Right now, the Texas Longhorns are leading the Big 12 Conference in scoring and rushing defense, which place them in the 25th position nationally in those categories. As well, the team is currently ranked in the third position of the BCS standings, with a record of 10 wins and only one loss and 1322 points.

For his part, Muschamp stated that he is very excited with the opportunity that the team is giving to him because he thinks Texas program is one of the best in the country and he is very pleased to be part of such a great organization and be able to learn directly from a leader as good as Coach Brown. Besides, a plus for him is that his family loves living there, so it is great to have the certainty that they will be there for a long time.

It is worth to mention that Texas decided to make this long-term arrangement because there have been rumors around about other programs such as Tennessee, Clemson and Washington having interest on hiring Muschamp, so, the Longhorns organization are just making quite clear to everyone that their defensive coordinator is not leaving Texas any time soon.

Muschamp started at Texas in January, 2008, with the highest salary for an assistant coach in the Big 12; $450,000 per year, and now this will be doubled starting next January as part of this future coaching position arrangement.

William Muschamp started his football career with the University of Georgia where he played in the safety position from 1991 through 1994 participating in two bowl games for the Dawgs. After his graduation he became a graduate assistant coach for the defensive coordinator at Auburn University in 1995 until 1996.

Before joining Texas, he also worked with the LSU, where he started as linebackers coach in 2001 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2002. The team had the best defensive records in the SEC during his tenure. After the 2004 season he spent some time in professional football, joining the Miami Dolphins as assistant defense head coach, reaching very good records as well. However, he decided to go back to college action taking the position of defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2006, doing a great job there too.
