Music Promotion – Top 3 Most Marketed Female Singers in the Industry - By: Selena Valoure

Music is one of the most competitive sectors of today’s economy. Millions of dollars are made and spent on musicians and bands and the market continues to grow every year. There’s no doubt that a natural ability to sing is critical in becoming a musician, but is it the most important factor in your success? The answer is no.

You can have the best voice in the world but if you can’t market yourself (or find a team who can), you’re not going to be successful. If you can’t find a group of dedicated fans that can relate to you, and if you don’t have an image that people want to look up to, you’re odds of making millions are relatively non-existent.

Luckily, there are a number of professionals who have significant expertise in marketing musicians – just ask these highly popular (and very successful) singers:

1. Britney Spears. I think everyone will agree that Britney Spears is not the greatest singer in the world (sorry Brit). Compared to legendary singers like Whitney Houston or Tina Turner, Britney can barely hold a note. So why is she the single most popular singer of our generation? Because of her image.

Britney has a strong team of promoters who have made sure that (in the beginning) she was seen as an innocent, yet sexy pop princess. Even when things took a turn for the worse (shaved head, rehab etc.), Britney still received so much publicity and promotion that she remained one of the most sought after figures in the world. A little bit of talent, a relatable image and a great marketing team is definitely the recipe for success – just ask Britney.

2. Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is a mere 16 years old, yet she’s one of the richest and most successful musicians of her time. But did fame just fall into Miley’s lap? Not at all.

Miley (much like Britney) has a great team of professionals behind her who came up with the genius idea of taking the fame she received from her Hannah Montana series and combining it with her real-life dream of being a singer. The success of Miley’s Best of Both Worlds Tour is a great indication of what happens when you market a young girl to the right crowd. A little bit of the real Miley Cyrus, combined with her character Hannah Montana gave fans the opportunity to get to know the real Miley Cyrus – who is now twice as famous as before.

3. Jessica Simpson. Jessica Simpson has the most dedicated manager in the world – her father. Jessica’s first priority has always been singing but it wasn’t always easy for her to outshine the midriff baring, hot-pants wearing competitors in the world of pop music. So what does she do to get noticed? She (and a team of professionals) create a reality TV show of her life as a newlywed with then-husband Nick Lachey.

The show was a huge hit and, as a result, Jessica began to see her record sales rise as well. Shortly after the success of the show, Jessica began plastering her face on anything and everything she could to make money. Today, the 27-year-old singer has multiple lines of clothing, shoes, bathing suits, fragrances, cosmetics, hair care products and more. If that’s not marketing your image to make a buck, what is?

You can have all the talent in the world but if you don’t have the right marketing team behind you, you won’t become famous. These days, you have to be multi-talented to keep your name on the map. Think you’re up to the challenge?
