It is tuff to say which GPS is the best GPS for geocaching simply because there is no one “best” GPS for geocaching. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of GPS’s out there that will be fit for geocaching more so than others. But the thing is that, there really is no one perfect GPS for geocaching. What really matters it that the individual using the GPS receives every benefit of his/her GPS that she needs to be successful at geocaching. Every geocacher has his/her preferences for their GPS and some GPS units may or may not be sufficient for that person.

The key to getting a good GPS that will work well with your needs is to think of every possible thing you may want from the unit. For instance some people may want to geocache at night, and without having a digital color mapping system if would be extremely difficult to see the coordinates.

However, there are several key features all geocachers should be sure to have in their GPS. For starters every GPS unit should be handheld or mobile for obvious reasons. The other key features include; lightweight, memory space, WAAS capability, water proof/resistant.

They GPS defiantly needs to be handheld. geocaching is primary a recreational sport done outdoors. If your GPS is mounted in a car you might find it quiet difficult to actually get out in nature and search for the cache.

A lightweight GPS is one of the most important factors for my GPS. Some handheld GPS units can weigh up to 3 pounds. Carrying a 3 pound device around all day can become tedious and geocaching is supposed to be fun, not tedious. So go with GPS that weigh between 1 and 2 pounds.

The amount of memory space your GPS has is depends entirely on you and your needs. If you plan on storing waypoints for future long term use then I recommend getting as much memory as possible. However, additional memory can become quiet prices so only get as much as you need.

WAAS capability is a new technology that will soon be standard on all handheld GPS. WAAS allows for pin point accuracy of up to 3 meter. And for geocaching, accuracy is extremely important. If you have ever been in search of a well hidden cache then you know how important accuracy can be. So be sure to spring for the GPS that has WAAS capabilities.

The last, and possibly the most important feature your GPS needs to have is being water resistant or water proof. Geoaching as many know is an out door activity, which mean weather does apply. No one wants their $200 piece of equipment being destroyed by a little rain. Lucky, today most GPS are in fact water resistant.

-Long battery life (between 15-25 hours)

-Plenty of memory to hold waypoints (14-25 MB should be good)

-Easily portable/light weight (hand held)

-I geocache at night so a easily readable screen

-WAAS capability (allows for accuracy of up to 3 meters)

-Water proof/resistant
