Having virus protection on your laptop is important, but it is doubly for a laptop. The reason it's more important on a laptop is because your laptop is designed to be portable and therein lies the problem. When you're at home or at work you will generally have a safe Internet connection or at least a more secure Internet connection. When you take your laptop on the road to coffee shops or hotels you're using a public Internet service. This puts your laptop at risk.

Usually you know you have a virus on your laptop when it is too late. Your laptop might started acting slow, give you a ton of warning messages, or you might be getting a lot of nasty grams from your friends telling you that you have sent them an infected e-mail.

A good way to ensure that you keep yourself safe from most of the viruses out there is to have an antiviral program on your laptop. However, these are not 100% efficient as new viruses come out daily. The antiviral programs do their best to keep up with them but might not be able to catch all of them. Some of the more popular antiviral software programs on the market today are; Bitdefender and Vipre antivirus software.

These software programs are able to tell you if viruses come on your laptop, block most of them and then they are able to quarantine the virus for you, if needed. When a virus does come on your laptop, it will give you a warning message. When you get a warning message you need to make sure to disconnect from the Internet and then run the quarantine programs as quickly as possible. This is to ensure that the virus does not spread to anyone else. After you have quarantine the virus, you should run the programs again to make sure that you don't have any other viruses on the laptop also.

It's a good idea to back up your laptop files regularly. The reason for this is for insurance purposes. If you do get a virus on their laptop that renders it inoperable, then you might have to reboot your laptop from scratch. After you reformat your laptop you will be able to upload all your old files back onto it.

The very worst thing that you can do is not have any antivirus protection on your laptop and there are numerous programs out there that are free so there should be no excuse to not have one.
