70’s and 80’s are remembered by many being the harbingers of different fashion styles and statements. The designs were state-of-the-art and leading edged and struck a chord with millions of people. The fashion had changed very rapidly during those years. The emergence of MTV revolutionised music industry, fashion and anything it can be linked to. During those year people were trying to reinvent themselves to suit the changing times. Such changes brought by people in them were quick and unceremonious.

In the decade of 70’s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. In 80’s the style almost inverted itself. Women started to wear bolder dresses with shoulder pads. Men switched to wear full sleeve shirts crafted from costly fabric with baggy loose trousers which subsided on the lower portion.. “Romantic Movement” influenced by the former ruffians was popularly started by a new designer romantic look. The hot and trendy outfits of leather and designer jeans also emerged later and became part of fashion.

Corporate women began to wearing pointed and high heeled shoes. At parties, women wore glossy, bright colored and transparent shoes.. The most popular leisure wear clothing of this era was jog pants and track suits. Acid washed faded jeans and denim jackets along with piercing and tattooing were made popular by the music bands. Men began to use flashy earrings. Hairdo’s changed with shiny voluminous looks being in fashion. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was popular among teenagers. Men kept longer hair and females kept short hair.

People began to show off their wealth and status by wearing jewellery embedded with valuable stones. Women wore long odd earrings which sometimes did not match each other. They often even used single earrings. Fine silver and gold chains, punk style, neon colours in jewellery defined trends. Enamel and modern shapes also gave a bit of edge over the old jewellery. In the 80’s came the digital watches having wristbands in metallic which later on changed to dial watches for adults and plastic-type watches in vibrant colours for teenagers. These watches were designed with roman numerals. High class preferred to wear Movado style that has been sleek and had a dot at 12. Once in a blue moon people also wore more than one watch at the same time. People also made it a point to use fine gold bracelets and hoops earrings.

Designer bags made of leather were also among the trend setters. Clutch bags captivated interest amongst people for being so firm and appressed. Stylish briefcases also sold very well. It was customary for women to match their shoe colour to their bags. Numerous types of shawls in various colours and patterns were around for different events. In the daytime they wore shawls with tank tops and with gowns during the night. Designer underwear made waves in this period. Women used light colored, laced panties. Men preferred bright colored boxer shorts. Around 1984-85 metal framed glasses gained popularity. A smaller rounder type was the people’s choice over the decade. Fashion had a huge repercussion and bearing on the lives of people during those decades.
