It seems impossible to work without a computer these days. Sure, netbooks are all the rage, but a desktop computer can prove to be a surprisingly worthwhile option. Even so, there are some things to keep in mind when you buy desktop computers.
Do you want a brand new desktop unit, one that has been refurbished, or something that has been used? In general, refurbished and used desktop computers are effective cost-saving measures for those on a budget. Of course, brand new desktop computers usually come with a more comprehensive warranty policy. A used or refurbished desktop computer may be more appropriate for someone with some knowledge of how a computer works.
Second, you need to know just what you want the computer to do for you. If all your computing needs can be summed up as "surfing the internet and writing reports", then it wouldn't make sense to purchase a powerful top-of-the-range gaming system that would make the most hardcore gamer gasp admiringly, would it? You can actually save some money when you buy desktop computers whose specifications are just what you need, instead of what you might need. Sales assistants may attempt to up-sell your choice, but you need to stand firm. You don't need another goodie bag anyway.

It used to be that brand new desktop computers were all about their processors. This is now outdated as most entry-level models come equipped with multi-core, multi-processor systems above 2.0GHz. What you need to consider is when you intend to buy another processor – if you envision an upgrade only after three years, then try to get the best processor within your budget. If you intend to upgrade your system every two years, then such concern is unnecessary. Memory is important to system performance, so try to get the most you can afford regardless of whether you plan regular upgrades or not. Ample hard disk drive storage is also preferable, especially if you store music on your desktop.

Last but not least, the computer monitor you choose can also have an impact on the quality of your computer usage experience. Monitors that are 24-inches wide are generally well accepted and quite affordable.
