You've had your computer for years and it's starting to show. Nowadays, startups take forever and you're lucky to turn on your computer without having System32 and L sass.exe errors or stop error codes pop on you in the middle of work. You decide that you've had enough and you want to buy a new computer. Sure this isn't a bad idea but buying a new computer can be expensive. Anyhow, how long will your brand new computer run smoothly for before it suffers the same fate?

A PC's performance can wither from age but this isn't the main cause of slow down. They simply get unnecessarily pushed to their limits. There are people who seem to install every known program under the sun which they never even use. Applications use up masses amount of hard drive space and can slow your computer to a crawl. Hold your horses though, because there's a right and wrong way to remove programs.

Removing programs badly usually means lots of orphaned files, registry keys and device drivers which is a recipe for disaster. Registry problems cause software and hardware incompatibilities as well as the notorious unmountable boot volume blue screen, or BSOD. Although a complete system restore will wipe out needless files and get your PC running like new, the process is a bit of a pain. First you would have to backup any files you want to keep and after the reinstallation you would need to update and reinstall your programs.

The alternative answer to a faster computer is maintenance and a little more restrain when adding programs. Maintenance can take a little work but it will not take long when you grow accustomed to doing it. And compared to getting screen freezes and blue screen error codes it's nothing to gripe about. The following are some maintenance tips you can start today:

Well for starters, stop installing every new program on the planet. Yes, there are tons of excellent free software out there and it's tempting to download and install them thinking you might use them, but here's the fact, you won't. Go to your programs and note all the ones that you have used in the past 2 months. There's a good chance that you'll see a bunch of programs you forgot you even had.

Go through any programs that you don't need and uninstall them. But make sure to do it properly by going to Control Panel and Remove Programs. IT's a good idea to delete any files that you don't plan to use in the future. Mp3s, videos and photos can use up masses of space and can easily be transferred to an external hard drive. Freeing up space on your hard drive is easy to do and will increase your PCs speed.

Defragment your drive several times a month to help speed up programs and use the Clean Disk utility to delete temporary files. Ensure that there aren't lots of unneeded running applications when you boot your computer. If you see lots of application icons on the bottom right toolbar that you don't use, disable the auto-start function on each one. Of course, antivirus and auto-update functions should be left on. If you feel comfortable in doing so, you can also use the msconfig command and disable any startup programs. Doing this will help speed up your startup and shutdown times.

Finally, it's vital that you have an antivirus program installed and that you scan your PC frequently. You'll be surprised at how many nasty bugs your PC can pick up from surfing the Net nowadays.
