Summaries of some of the many other players in digital communications are given below:

• Colt Telecom Group Ltd, with parents in Luxembourg, is a leading provider of data, voice and managed services to business and government customers across Europe.

• Global Crossing (UK) Telecommunications Ltd is a part of a US-based international group offering IP solutions to 40% of Fortune-500 companies. In the UK, Global Crossing provides a full range of managed voice, data, Internet and e-commerce solutions; customers include more than 100 UK government departments.

• KCOM Group PLC, better known as Kingston Communications, is the telecommunications provider for East Yorkshire, based in Hull. The company is an unusual survivor from the early 1990s, when local councils such as Hull City were given telecommunications licences; all other council systems were later absorbed by British Telecom, but there was a tacit agreement that Hull could remain as a permanent ‘test case’ for localized supply. The network was digitised by 1989 and a company was floated on the Stock Exchange in 1999. KCOM’s Affiniti offers services to businesses across the UK.
• Tiscali, based in Sardinia, is a major Internet company in its home market and in the UK, where it includes ISP and television services. Tiscali TV was founded on the company’s 2007 purchase of HomeChoice, a television and VOD service to several major UK cities. During 2008, there were consistent media rumours that Tiscali’s UK operations were for sale, with BSkyB and Vodafone among the interested parties. Tiscali is the fourth-largest UK ISP
by number of subscribers.

• Verizon is a US-based, leading global communications supplier to business, claiming to operate ‘the world’s most connected IP network’. There are 321 offices in 75 countries, including the UK. In 2005, Verizon absorbed a US rival, MCI, which had itself been created by the merger of MCI Communications and WorldCom in 2003.Digital Communications can be an interesting Project Report on Marketingto work on.
