Major corporations like GE and Kitchen Aid have joined forces with the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to create energy saving appliances in over fifty categories. Here's a short list of the best local big box stores that carry the best energy saving kitchen appliances that are approved by the EPA and the Department of Energy.

Ace Hardware - While most people don't consider Ace Hardware when searching for kitchen appliances, Ace carries a sizeable line of energy star appliances for purchase. While there may not be a whole section dedicated to appliances, Ace will have the best quality and most energy efficient appliances available. Check online or in the weekly newspaper for information on any upcoming sale items.

Sears - Sears is the best known store for appliances. While you won't find all the go with it's as you would find at a builder's store, Sears does offer a huge line of energy star appliances, from washer and dryers to regular kitchen apparatus. In fact, many soon to be newlyweds register at Sears to get the best household appliances for their new home. Sears offers over eight hundred different energy efficient household appliances and has received several best energy star retailer awards.

If you are looking for high quality energy efficient appliances, Sears is your best bet. Also, Sears has great sale and credit options, so that you are not paying upfront. They also will remove your old equipment and properly dispose of it for you. Not many other stores will offer such great service.

The Home Depot - The Home Depot is your one stoop shopping center for all things household, however, the Depot does not offer as many appliances as Sears, the major appliance retailer, but with over five hundred appliances available, you are sure to find a piece of machinery to satisfy your needs. Appliances range from GE and Maytag, as well as many other top manufacturers but there are many other options including: Franklin Chef, Jenn-Air, Hotpoint, Profile, Amana, LG, and Americana. Home Depot also offers consultations via internet and in store to help answer all of your questions.

Lowes - Lowes has just fewer than five hundred Energy Star products and while most of the appliances are Frigidaire, Lowe's offers other high quality appliances, including such brands as GE, Whirlpool and Samsung. They usually have a Sunday insert in the newspaper, so keep an eye out for sales and specials on whatever energy saving appliance you are looking for.

Wal-mart - Wal-mart is not known for major kitchen appliances, but for smaller apartments and dorm rooms, you can't beat Wal-Mart for smaller energy saving apparatus, like a mini fridge or microwaves. They are rather inexpensive and space saving, not to mention, energy saving for all those green kids.
