Loading Bay Equipment in Today's World - By: Felicity Lightbody

With more and more people now shopping online there is now an even greater demand for transportation of goods around the country. The demand is for even faster delivery and distribution of goods and the location of warehouses and loading bay equipment can have a dramatic impact on the speed and execution of the loading process. Loading bays are also used for more commercial and industrial operations, when goods and assets including machinery needs to be unloaded and transported on site. Any active business site or factory will usually have an inflow and outflow of tools, equipment and loading bays are at the heart of this infrastructure.

Most people will have seen loading bays on the outside of buildings, and perhaps the most common site is at post and delivery depots that are numbered and assigned. Often the infrastructure and service of handling materials readily happens inside warehouses, factories and industrial units every day that can be directly linked via elevators to storage and staging areas.

Different loading docks will vary with the type of loading bays and loading bay equipment that is needed but the majority will have some form dock leveller. A dock leveller is an important tool and equipment and used when there are differences in the levels between unloading and loading. Dock levellers are steel constructed and incorporate a hydraulic or air powered system, where the height can easily and quickly adjusted at the push of a button. The vast majority of warehouses usually handle goods and materials in the form of pallets and dock levellers are perfectly suited in processing these goods.

Scissor lifts are also usually present at loading bays and operate in a similar way to dock levellers, with the biggest difference in that they have scope for far greater adjustments in height. Scissor lifts or dock lifts work via a concertina effect where criss-crossing supports move towards each other which in turn pushes a horizontal platform upwards to reach varying heights. These dock lifts are ideal when maintaining the level of goods and products is vital, to prevent damage or spillage and can be either stationary or mobile around the loading bay. Some scissor lifts can easily reach over 15 metres or more in height.

Most loading bay equipment can be made bespoke to accommodate for individual business needs and environments, although there are of course more standard types of equipment that are suitable for businesses of varying size.
