The FetchTV set-top box/player/recorder will soon be adding Sky channels to its online tv selection after striking a deal with the satellite broadcaster. Sky announced back in October 2009, that it had struck a deal with IP Vision allowing its customers to access its Sky Player TV service.
The Sky Player service includes premium channels such as Sky Movies and Sky Sports, plus live and on-demand content, viewers are able to watch content online dependent on their subscription level.
The FetchTV smartbox combines Freeview digital channels plus a DVR and gives access to tv-on-demand and online tv services, it also allows you to wirelessly connect to the home network. Eddie Abrams, chief executive officer of FetchTV said: “Freeview customers who have one of our FetchTV SmartBoxes can now access and watch Sky’s pay TV content on their TV over the open internet. “This launch gives consumers a real choice of how they can access fantastic sports, movies and entertainment content on their TV screen.”
It has been a busy year for Sky, who earlier this year confirmed that it has agreed deals with Cello and 3View which will see its online TV service also made available on a range of web connected television sets and digital set-top boxes. Of course the only downside to having Sky on all these devices is the fact you still have to be a subscriber to watch anything.

Another internet tv report, this time from the Diffusion Group tells us that by 2020, internet tv will be consumed by more people than traditional tv. Viewing numbers for online tv are always rising, but the new shift will be in the way viewers watch. The time consumers sit in the front room watching tv will stay the same, but the way they watch will change drastically.
The big shift in viewer habits will happen during the next 5 to 7 years, when the report says that the tv set will become the main device for viewing online tv. As set top boxes, connected game consoles, and Internet TV make broadband to the living room more seamless, then it will become a bigger part of the mix.
The Diffusion Group report that during 2009 there was a rise of 84% in watching tv online across the entire television viewing audience, whilst tv viewing stayed still. They predict that internet tv and video viewing will increase as more internet content moves over to your TV screen. Although complete video viewing from all sources remains the same at around 32 hours per week. Essentially, they predict a big increase in Internet viewing numbers around 2015-2016, which will coincide with a drop in broadcast TV consumption. By the year 202, the switch of power will be complete.
When you consider that pretty much every major TV manufacturer is currently working on new internet connected televisions so owners can use widgets to offer access to e-mail, apps, downloads, and other interactive features from the main tv set, you would not bet against this report being true.
