Live Green in Minneapolis – Inexpensive Ways - By: nse media

Living in Minneapolis gives us an immediate opportunity to put our heads high and feel proud of living in a city that is ranked the 11th “Greenest City” in Popular Science’s report of “America’s 50 Greenest Cities.” This high ranking is in large part due to the city’s use of renewable electricity, public transportation and carpooling. We’re also making strides in Green Construction with buildings like Blue, a 242 unit apartment residence in Uptown Minneapolis, which just became the 1st privately funded residential dwelling to gain LEED Certification in Minnesota. But a lot of us ask the question, what can I do on an individual basis to propel Minneapolis to the top? Here are some simple ways to help our city that we love.

Recycle. Did you know that Minneapolis has one of the best recycling programs in the country? According to the Recycling Association of Minnesota, in May 2006 Minnesota was rated as second best in the nation in recycling. Congratulations! But, we can always do more. The City of Minneapolis has an extensive list of how and where to recycle on its website. They also have a lot of information as to what can be recycled. You’d be amazed to find out how much you’re putting in your dumpster could actually be going in the recycling bin.

Buy Local. Minneapolis is surrounded by some of the best farmers in the world! Take advantage of this. Visit the many farmers markets and support the local foods in our grocery stores. Supporting local food save tons and tons of petroleum that most conventional foods need just to get to the grocer’s shelves.

Additionally, it will be much healthier, fresher and benefit the local economy.
Walk, Bike. We have a remarkable city that can really be appreciated by taking a stroll or hopping on a bicycle. According to the City of Minneapolis, we’re ranked the #2 bicycling city in the nation! They state that we have 43 miles of streets with dedicated bicycle lanes and 84 miles of off-street bicycle paths. Opt out of revving up your car next time you’re heading out for dinner and hit the streets with your bike to try new local restaurants. As a side benefit, with all that peddling, desert won’t feel so guilty.

When it comes down to it, Minneapolis makes it easy for us to live green. We simply have to take advantage of it. Look out #1… Minneapolis is making a run!
