Line up those books in a bookcase - By: Gen Federico

It has been always accepted that a bookcase is a marvellous piece of furniture, built with horizontal shelves for storing reading materials, mostly books. A bookcase consists of a unit of wood with two or more shelves fitted at different heights for a range of books that are printed at varying heights.

Shelves may be fixed or adjusted according to the height and width of the room it is intended for, some bookcases are meant to be fixed permanently to a wall, but most are built to be free standing. Shelves fitted in a book case are more likely to receive admiration from family and friends, while some avid collectors of books preferred to have a book case, fitted with doors to protect their books from air pollution.

Looking at the history of books there is a reference to books being first written by hand, stored in small boxes, shelves and cupboards, usually by clergymen or wealthy people. The cupboards with their closed doors, gave way to open shelves and bookcases were born. The larger books that would be too big for shelving would be laid down on their sides, to avoid damage to its fragile spine.

Books displayed on shelves are not the only popular item. Collectors of crystal, pottery and ornaments love to display their wares on shelves for others to admire. However today in houses up and down the country, the most popular bookcases are ones made in Scandinavian pine wood and are available online. Book shelves and shelving are a popular way of storing unused items in bedrooms, storage is important in all homes, including both modern and traditional homes.

Lines of books standing side by side on pine shelving in a study, looks absolutely magnificent. At Shelfstore we have a shelving system and pine wood that can be adapted to fit any room in any home.
