Window shades are some kind of covering for windows that you will usually see in houses, offices or places of business. It is used to protect these places from heat, vision, etc. If before what is commonly used are curtains, now window shades, also known as blinds, are proven to be more effective than curtains in terms of their actual functions. If for aesthetics purposes curtains may give better personality to a room, blinds serve its function more.

There are several kinds of blinds, depending on their materials. There are plastic kinds, metal, etc. But one of the more popular ones is the wooden shades. This shall be discussed in detail in this article.

other than the material used, wooden and metal blinds are two very different kinds of window shades. Wooden blinds, also called bamboo shades, are used in a more domestic setting. You might have first seen this in a house from the suburb or in a less modern place or in a house where the theme is more earth-like than modern. In this kind of blinds, slats are made of wood and usually horizontal. These slats are attached together by pulleys that are corded. You can pull the cord up so to reveal the window and let the light in or to allow you to see the view from the inside or to partially angle it so as to raise the blinds in a way you desire. You may pull the cord to raise the blind revealing only a quarter of the window, two quarters or more.

Wooden shades are sometimes called bamboo shades but actually they can be made of different materials. But generally wooden shades are sold in various kinds of finish. They may vary in their kinds of paint. Usually, they are colored brown, probably to give it a more natural look, but they can still differ in color and design of paint. They can also differ in terms of size, which actually means they are different in the size of slats. The length may be standard but the width could either be 25 millimeters, 35 or 50.

It may not be usually seen but wooden shades may also be vertical. Unlike the horizontal kind, where the slats are really thin, vertical wooden shades have wider slats. This is not that different from the horizontal except that to reveal the window you will have to pull the cord so the slats will be drawn to the side gathering them in that part instead of drawing them upwards.

As always, when there is original, there is always a fake kind. In blinds, these are called faux wood blinds. This is a less expensive alternative to wooden blinds. These are still made of natural wood but only some particles of it mixed with composite materials made by men. These faux wood blinds are almost, if not totally, undistinguishable from the real thing. And cheap and versatile as they are, they have become popular to many consumers.
