The Modern Warfare series has revolutionized the shooter genre with its lightning fast gameplay, attention to realism, dramatic storytelling capabilities and stellar online gameplay. If you're looking for some other games to fill the void until Modern Warfare 3 comes out, here are some shooters bound to keep you playing.

Team Fortress 2

While this game takes a more cartoony, 1950's style than the Modern Warfare series, the online shooting aspect is superb. Now free to play on PC, Team Fortress 2 is based around the idea of class based warfare, so you have the Heavy who can operate a huge machine gun but moves slowly, the Scout who can run very fast but packs less of a punch and the Engineer who doesn't have much for weapons but can build an automatic machine gun to cover an area.

Gears of War 1, 2 and 3

The Gears of War series is twice as gritty and bloody as most military themed shooters, casting you as soldier Marc Fenix against hordes of alien invaders. This third person shooter was one of the first to introduce the notion of taking cover to the modern shooter and provides players with intense, fast paced, meaty combat.

Battlefield 3

When Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 came out at the same time, their similar themes and gameplay sparked something of a rivalry between them like Mario vs. Sonic or Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat. In truth, they're both decent games and Battlefield 3 makes for a fine way for Modern Warfare fans to stay busy until the next in the series comes out.

Shooters are addictive fun, but once you get to a certain point it feels like you've explored every nook and cranny of every level, memorized all the best strategies for online play and there's nothing left to do but wait for the sequel. Well most of the games on this list can be had at a bargain, or even for free, so give them a try and see if they don't keep your thumbs busy between now and the release of MW4.
