To be a good photographer you must master how to manipulate lighting conditions to work on your advantage, be it artificial light or light coming from the sun. Needless to say, a good lighting then is the secret to a good photograph. Light in photography has the same value in interior design. Lighting can make or break a good concept for the interior of your house. You can manipulate lighting in a room to evoke certain feelings in people. For instance, little light gives you a sense of privacy and make you want to cuddle in a big bed and start snoozing. You can get the effect that you want not only by choosing the correct artificial light for your room but also by controlling the natural light that comes inside you room through the help of window shades!

If you happen to have an experience buying window shades or roller shades or any type of it, then you have heard the terms opaque, semi opaque and sheer among others. Just an overview these terms help describe the different transparency and lighting levels of window shades. So if you are not familiar with those terms and you're planning on buying some shades read on and I hope this might help you.

1. Sheer. A sheer shade filters little amount of light and offers little privacy. This might be perfect for study rooms and kitchen where you want ample amount of good light to enter to keep the room cozy enough and people all up and energized.
2. Semi-Sheer. This kind of window shade allows moderate amount of light. It diffuses the light coming in and allows you to enjoy a good view from your window.
3. Light Filtering. This is also called as semi-opaque, a popular option for windows on living rooms. It allows lesser amount of light than the first two categories and the major difference is that it completely blocks the view from outside giving you more privacy. It can subdue the strong light from the afternoon sun, giving you a relaxed feeling.
4. Room Darkening. This one is a good choice for windows in bedrooms. It can darken a room but still allow some light to enter. It can calm your senses after a chaotic day.
5. Blackout or Opaque. From the name itself opaque, it blocks all the light making a room appear darker. This is a perfect option for those entertainment rooms to give you the feel of cinematic experience.

The term sometimes just differs depending on the brand that your going to get. You just have to remember sheer fabric allows more light for opaque or blackout shade completely darkens a room. Some clothing technology even devised some shades that filter ultraviolet rays entering the room. Don't be discouraged in buying some shades with this jargons, start decorating with window shades and remember to manipulate light to your advantage and have fun!
