Leucoderma, also identified as vitiligo, is a worrying skin condition. The word literally means white skin. There is a gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers which results in white patches. These patches look ugly, in particular in persons with a dark complexion.

Leucoderma is a chronic disarray of the skin where the skin stops producing pigments that color the skin. As a result white patches appear erratically at different locations on the skin. These patches are white in color and as time passes may increase in number and size.

Leucoderma is not a medical term. It is only a substitute name for vitiligo. Vitiligo is a more common name for this disease in the west where as in Asia leucoderma is used more.

The Skin is colored in diverse shades of brown due to a pigment called melanin. Special cells called melanocytes are responsible for the making of melanin. Sometimes, for reasons dubious, the melanocytes stop producing melanin which results in white skin patches.

Leucoderma appears as odd, harmless, white spots or patches disturbing the appearance of the sufferer. Mostly, no other symptoms can be noted excluding whiteness of the skin.

The whiteness usually starts as a small discoloured white or pale or brown spot which spreads and become whiter day by day and becomes milky white in the course of time.

The occurrence may be in a single spot or multiple spots. Hair on the spot will also become white. The hypopigmented or white skin is usually margined by hyperpigmented demarcations.

Leucoderma Treatment

This is the first line of handling for leucoderma. The success rate of leucoderma creams depends on the time span of the disease.

In case the patient is misery from this skin disorder since one year and has now decided to apply these steroid creams, the chances of enhancement are less.

Home Remedies for Leucoderma

1. Psoralea seeds are found very beneficial in the treatment of Leucoderma. Seeds should be soaked in juice of ginger for 3 days, and dried and powdered. Then take 1 gram of the powder with fresh milk for 40 days.

2. Red clay found on hill slopes or waterside are also useful. They should be mixed with ginger juice and applied over white spots once a day.

3. Drink water that has been kept during the night in a copper vessel.

4. Combination of turmeric and mustard oil are also beneficial. About 500 grams of pounded turmeric should be soaked in 8 kilograms of water. Heat it till only 1 kilogram is left. Strain and add 500 grams of mustard oil and reheat till only oil is left behind. Apply it on the white patches every morning and evening for a month.

5. Paste made form radish seeds and vinegar is valuable. 35 grams of the powdered seeds should be mixed with vinegar and applied on white patches.

6. Psoralea and tamarind seeds should be soaked in water for 3-4 days. They should be dried, ground into paste and practical on the patches for a week.
