Learn about the EPPP exam - By: PETC Psychology Education

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) is an organization which is responsible for the licensure and certification of psychologists in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1961 and is an international leader and knowledge resource worldwide which regulates and plays a major role in providing credentials to psychologists. The EPPP exam is developed and owned by this organization with the assistance of the Professional Examination Service (PES). The EPPP exam is conducted on the computer and administered in a computerized format through the Prometric network of computer. The exam is conducted across a number of testing centers with the help and support of the state and provincial boards. It is important to note that the exam is made available in paper and pencil format only in those jurisdictions which do not have any access to the Prometric network.

The EPPP exam consists of eight content areas:

Biological bases of behavior: It test the knowledge of the candidate in Biological and neural bases of behavior, Psychopharmacology and methodologies which support the body of knowledge.

Cognitive-affective bases of behavior: This content area tests the knowledge of cognition and neural basis, theories of learning, emotion and executive function and also focuses on factors that have an influence on cognitive performance.

Social and Multicultural bases of behavior: It tests the knowledge of the candidate in intrapersonal, interpersonal, intragroup and intergroup processes, theories of personality and various issues in diversity.

Growth and Life span development: This area tests the knowledge of development across the life-span, patterns of development and the risk factors which influence the developmental outcome for individuals.


Assessment and Diagnosis: It tests the knowledge of psychometrics, assessment models and instruments, assessment methods of change by individuals, groups, organization etc.

Treatment, Intervention and Prevention: It tests the knowledge of individual, family, organizational for concerns in diverse populations, consultation models and processes etc.
Research Methods and Statistics: It tests the knowledge of research design, statistical, models etc.

Ethical, Legal & Professional issues: It requires knowledge of codes of ethics, legal mandates and restrictions etc.

The exam is an objective multiple -choice questions which cover areas pertaining to the knowledge which is essential in practicing in the field of psychology. Each form of the exam has 225 questions, out of which 200 are scored and 25 questions are pre-test items. But with effect from August 1, 2011, 175 questions will be scored and the remaining 50 will be pretest items.
